Nurofen: who are we?

Like many people, you probably recognise the famous, brightly-coloured Nurofen target. Nurofen is one of the leading branded oral pain-relievers. This is our story.

The inventors of ibuprofen

It all began in the 1960s, when 3 colleagues from Boots Pharmaceuticals developed ibuprofen – the active ingredient in Nurofen. In 1969 ibuprofen was introduced as a prescription only medicine for relieving arthritic pain and other inflammatory conditions.

It wasn’t long before Nurofen gained a reputation as an effective pain reliever as well as an anti-inflammatory and in August 1983 it was launched as an over-the-counter medicine in the UK under the name of Nurofen. The brand is now owned by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare (UK) Ltd.

A first for children

As well as discovering ibuprofen, Nurofen was the first to develop over the counter ibuprofen-based pain-relief for babies and children – launched as Nurofen for Children in 1998 in the UK. Ibuprofen suspension gives fast, effective relief from pain and the discomfort of fever for babies and children as young as three months (providing baby weighs 6kg or more) to 12 years of age.
