Cold and flu can grip the nation, causing widespread congestion, illness, coughing and sore throats in the classroom. It’s hard to avoid child cold and flu when the season appears, but there are ways to help relieve the nasty symptoms.

Causes of child cold and flu

The common cold has been around since before we can remember. It’s a common infection of the upper respiratory tract affecting the nose, throat, ears and sinuses. A cold is caused by viruses, which are highly contagious and the infection can be passed on by air and hand contact – which is why it spreads so easily. Flu, or influenza is caused by the influenza virus.

Symptoms of cold and flu

Symptoms of child cold and flu can be miserable and can last for as long as a week. They include;

  • Congestion
  • A runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Mild fever
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Body aches and pains

If your child’s symptoms last for longer than a week and you feel they are more complicated, you should seek advice from your doctor. Flu complications can lead to pneumonia, which is very serious.
